From Arggg to Oooh La La

** WARNING **
this transformation requires NUMEROUS pictures
Enjoy : )
I picked this "treasure chest" up at a garage sale last weekend for $2.
It's a cedar chest. The only problem was the hinge
(you can see it inside on the side) was broken.
The owner had removed the top but had ALL the screws.
It MUST be MINE : )
I started by removing all the hardware and filing all the groves, holes and divots.
I kept teasing Monkey that I was gonna leave it like that.
I then sanded it and refilled everything making sure it was completely smooth.
After priming and 2 coats of a cream color
(and DAYS later - I wanted to make sure it was dry)
I wanted to add some yummy-ness.
I thought a pretty scroll design would work.
I looked threw a graphic design book
And found this ...
I took a picture of it and emailed it to myself (our scanner wasn't hooked up)
so that I could put it in PhotoShop to be able to print it out.
I then used carbon paper and traced the design.
Took me about 3 hours to do.
After I traced the design I colored it in with a Painters Pen in Black.

The top was next. I used some waffle batting I found at a garage sale for $.50.
I just used 4 pieces folded over.
I covered it with 30" of quilt batting that I picked up at Walmart for $2.50.
To finish it I used my favorite burlap coffee sack.

After the base was completely dry, I sanded it and glazed it
with some Ralph Lauren Glaze in Smoke.
Re-attached the top.
Added a pillow ... and ...

Voila
** sidenote - I GOTTA finish the wall behind it, lol.

You are amazing! I would never have had the patience to do the scroll. I would have enlarged the phtocopy and decoupaged that sucker on (lazy, I know!) Your trash to treasure pieces are awesome!

Just popped on over here from Miss Mustard Seeds. Love what you did with the cedar chest, especially the stencil..it's beautiful. I picked up curbside off of Free Cycle an enormous sized cedar chest that needs refurbishing. It's on my furniture refinish list.

Wow,at first I thought "Why is she covering up those planks & that great "distressed" texture it has?" But what a transformation! It looks AWESOME! I think I get stuck on a lot of the dark woods & finishes for my house & don't necessarily think of re-doing things in white, looks great though.

You are amazingly talented. You should be doing this for a living....and making oodles of money from it! I love to redo but would never attempt your "artwork" that you fill in then have the guts to sand! Kudos. I am going thru all your redos but am being bad and not commenting much. I am now following you thru email tho! Thanks for all the wonderful inspiration
